The graduate programs in the Teacher Education Department are designed for teachers who want to continue developing their professional commitment and competence. Students in the graduate programs examine current educational theory and practice and explore a variety of viewpoints to reflectively develop their professional competence and teaching style. They explore social issues affecting PK–12 students and expand their awareness of and respect for the unique development of each student. During their course work, they consider effective collaboration with and accountability to students, parents, colleagues, and the community. By reexamining the development of values and professional ethics, students gain greater intellectual and ethical insights.

Students complete course work — in Differentiated Instruction for Alternative Learning (DIAL) our online master degree program or they can receive a master degree in Teacher Education - which is the Master Degree component of our Teacher Education Certification Program

The Teacher Education Certification Program offers an alternative pathway to certification for non-traditional students who possess a baccalaureate degree and are interested in making career changes. The program prepares students for teaching grades 1-8 and qualifies them for the Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence license offered through the Department of Public Instruction. Upon completion of the licensure program, students can choose to apply to the master degree program, complete 8 additional graduate credits, and earn a Master of Arts in Education Degree.

Completion of the Differentiated Instruction for Alternative Learning (DIAL) program leads to an Alternative Education License (Wisconsin code 952). Students who do not wish to complete a master’s degree may seek licensure only in the Alternative Education Licensure-Only Program (WI 952). Based on the student’s interests and professional goals, each admitted graduate student designates a program of study and is assigned a faculty advisor in that area.

At the end of their program all students need to demonstrate proficiency in a portfolio based on the Wisconsin Teacher Standards in PI 34.02. Students in the Alternative Education Licensure-Only program will also complete a portfolio to reflect completion of specific licensure requirements.
