Master's Degree Programs

Nationally accredited by NCATE and the North Central Association, the Master of Arts in Education degree programs provide area educators with a graduate experience that reflects the University’s broader mission of developing the whole person. The master’s programs combines a nontraditional instructional format with an off-site and online delivery system designed to meet the needs of the adult learner. The programs allows educators to choose one of two areas, either Curriculum and Instruction or Leadership Studies. Both programs focus on individualized, personal, and professional development through carefully sequenced courses and experiences.

Based on Marian’s unique Learning-Centered Model, the content and design of the various graduate programs were developed from guidelines and standards of various professional associations, research, and sound professional practice. All students take a common core of classes, ensuring the continuation of a common knowledge base and the application of a Judaeo–Christian perspective and system of values. Students in both the Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Leadership programs analyze their own value structure and study the development and application of values in education. This focus on values is a feature that makes Marian’s graduate programs unique among others. The exploration of values and ethics in the program supports the university's emphasis on the education of the whole person, social justice, and the individual application of theory to practice.

Although Marian University’s primary commitment is to degree-seeking students, the University is conscious of its responsibility to provide quality course work for non-degree-seeking students as well. Therefore, classes in Professional Development (PDI 604, TDE 604, and EDL 604 Contemporary Issues) are also available for educators who wish to renew their professional licenses or for educators who wish to develop further expertise in specific areas.

From its inception, the graduate program has been centered around an innovative delivery system designed to allow teachers to complete their studies through intensive evening, weekend, and summer course formats offered at various sites throughout the state. Students may also take classes online, allowing for even greater flexibility. The sites have been selected strategically in response to student, alumni and employer requests for the program as well as individual classes. Today, the degree program is offered at Marian University in Fond du Lac and four outreach locations — Appleton, Milwaukee (West Allis), Green Bay and Wausau, and the Differentiated Instruction for At-Risk Learners (DIAL) program is offered completely online, with the exception of a one week summer institute on Marian's main campus. The Educational Technology program is housed in various school districts throughout the state. Selected courses for Professional Development are also scheduled at other locations as needed.

The School of Education at Marian follows the learning-centered model:
